THE LOUNGE VIP Bar
Australian Open 2019
The Lounge at Australian Open 2019 was an exclusive private cocktail lounge with a contemporary and eclectic interior. It was based in a 150 square metre venue and needed to accommodate 110 guests.
The 2019 Lounge presented an exciting opportunity to us as designers and ultimately to the guests that experience it. The brief delivered by Tennis Australia was left completely open with the only direction being that it should be “bold and contemporary”. This freedom resulted out of a successful history of environments we had been building in this space for five years. The venue is unusual in that it is a long thin curved space with a series of structural columns running down the centre of the room. Three metre tall windows run along the full length of one side and the other side is a pale grey wall surface. Tennis Australia requested we keep the length of the room as open as possible. We decided to tackle the hurdles of the central columns and blank wall surface as a unit and in doing so create a series of arches that linked the 30 metre long space. Initially at the end of the space there was to be a private lounge area which was later removed due to problems with the redevelopment of Melbourne Olympic Park.
We considered that with a clever approach we could play the larger space off against the smaller private lounge and at the same time use the journey of the guests up and down the long room as a strength.
CHARD International's solution was to create a quiet, calm design when entering and travelling one way up the room and then another contrasting more 'vocal' design that the guest would experience on the way back. This journey would make sense after guests had walked up the long space and entered into the back private lounge. On their way back geometric shapes in bold colour injected a sense of humour against the otherwise soft pink and green palette. The smaller private lounge area at the back provided a strong identity developed as an immersive “instagrammable” moment, with the room balancing retro style against more contemporary design. CHARD International worked closely with Dann Event hire in the development of bespoke furniture for the 2019 Lounge.
